I've followed Rip Haywire online for quite some time, and was thrilled to finally see a collection published! A brilliant mix of over-the-top action, hilarious characters, and sheer wit, Rip's one of the most entertaining comic strips I've ever read, the kind they just don't make enough of anymore.
My only complaints This collection starts with Year 2. (Where's Year 1? I remember reading them online, so I know they exist.) It also has some minor yet annoying production issues - no page numbers, no author page, not even any writing on the spine - that feel strangely amateur for such a professionally-executed comic strip.
Otherwise, Rip Haywire's still great fun, a strip well worth following if you haven't tried it yet.
Rip is back for more action than ever before in this collection of his second year strips. And man is there a lot of action as Rip, Cobra, TNT, and RJ travel the world to dole out justice to the bad guys wherever they maybe. The year begins with a bang as the gang jumps out of a plane into the jungle and it doesn't slow down there. RJ gets kidnapped, Cobra gets kidnapped (at least once) and tries to break up with Rip (at least twice), and Rip and TNT are left to rescue them and keep the gang together. And before the year ends they may face their biggest challenge yet with a crooked sheriff and his mysterious boss.
I've been following the Rip Haywire comic online for a while now and I absolutely love it. It's like a combination of MacGyver, Mark Trail, and well a lit bit of Mark Twain mixed in. And even though I can pop online and read this year anytime that I want, I love having a physical copy to take on the road, read in bed, or just share with my friends and introduce them to the greatness of Rip Haywire. Dan creates a well paced tale and really interesting characters. And his sense of humor is absolutely fantastic. The little quips that Rip and Cobra throw out at each other kept me laughing. And he does a great job of letting the characters grow and change (somewhat slowly) and I love seeing the evolution of Cobra's and Rip's relationship. My one small issue is that the collection dives into the middle of an adventure (carried over from the previous year) with no recap of what happened so we'd have to have the first book or pop online to see what was going on. I wish it just had a short little paragraph or a recap (or even the beginning strips of the adventure) just so that we knew what was happening.
This is a great book whether you're an old reader or a new reader. I can't wait to see what happens next and I look forward to the future adventures of Rip Haywire. I highly recommend this book and series.
This is the second volume collecting the comic strips featuring Rip Haywire, an adventure strip that feels like Steve Canyon, only with a lot more humor infused. I like it a lot - I'll definitely be picking up the other Rip Haywire collections!
