This was marvelous! It stuns me that this was a "first effort" of this author. The book shows effortless transition between the perspectives of a handful of local farmers and villagers, showing masterful insight into prejudices and inter-relationships on a local village level. The book is set in the pre-WW I world of rural England, w/ little mechanization. It details the bewildering encounter of "outside" political influences on villagers' lives - socialism.The dialogue reminds me of Tolkien's hobbit-talk of The Lord of the Rings. I found this very satisfying, pleasant. The author was clearly well-grounded in this world, as was Tolkien. Capturing the local diction is a remarkable "ear" for an author - and in this case a first publication of an author! Remarkable!
The book pleasantly presents the attitudes of a village in the English countryside before the early 20th Century intruded mechanization, divisive politics, and the plague of the Great war.
What a brilliant achievement! I am only a soldier, wounded and retired now, and so I can't claim any great knowledge of fiction, much less female authors and "sensitive" writing, so readers may discount my opinions.
It is remarkable to me that this author could have lived w/ Vera Brittain (or, really, that Brittain could have learned nothing from her!). Brittain's flat characters, and the fact that she never had the empathy and imagination to step out of an autobiographical perspective, idealizing herself and vilifying her antagonists, is in complete contrast to Holtby's brilliance as a novelist!

Written in the 1920s, this is the story of Mary Robson - a 28 year old married to a cousin old enough to be her father, in a marriage of convenience. Resigned to her lot, she devotes her time to her home and village affairs. Her interference, as 'queen' of the village, annoys Mr Coast the schoolmaster. And when fiery young socialist David Rossitur shows up and urges the local labourers to strike at harvest time, Coast is only to happy to back him and cause problems for the Robsons.
But Mary is falling for Rossitur...
Perfectly readable but not a very memorable or outstanding work.
Anderby Wold Not much of a read, the first book I have deleted! So predictable, no need for more words this time.
I'm afraid I found the book a little dull and the characters slow and unappealing I wanted to slap Mary.
Good read-she writes well. Alas, an ending sadder than warranted, or so it seemed to me.

Winifred Holtby's "Anderby Wold," published in 1923, was a promising beginning to a tragically short literary career that ended with the posthumous publication of her finest novel, South Riding, in 1936.
"Anderby Wold" is modest in its ambitions but graced with a sturdy structure and brisk pacing. It tells the dual stories of middle class farm wife Mary Robson and of her Yorkshire village, whose traditional ways are rocked by the advent of workers' rights and socialist agitation. Mary is a young, thoughtful woman locked into a dutiful but passionless marriage to the much older John, whose hard work has helped pay off the mortgage on her beloved farm, Anderby Wold. She engages in a frenetic schedule of civic duties and sponsorships, which are appreciated by some and resented by others. Mary and the village are shaken by the arrival of a young firebrand named David who plants the seeds of rebellion among the farm workers. These personal and political strands converge in a dramatic climax that is a bit over the top but gripping nonetheless.
"Anderby" is a breeze to read. Holtby writes vividly, in clear, simple sentences. Her observations about people and events are often tinged with a wry but never mean-spirited irony. The thing that stood out the most for me about "Anderby," as it did so strongly in "South Riding," is Holtby's empathy with characters of diverse origins and aspirations whose interests often clash. Whether her characters are heroic or villainous or inhabit the wide spectrum in-between, she always strives to understand them. "Anderby Wold" may not be a great novel, but it is an admirable one.
Kudos to Virago Modern Classics for republishing four of Holtby's novels in affordable, nicely designed paperbacks. Boos, however, for the typographical errors. Like so many publishers, Virago (an imprint of Little, Brown) seems to have abandoned the concept of proofreading.
